On Thursday March 5th, our teen photo class from ICP at THE POINT visited Carlos Javier Ortiz’s exhibition We All We Got, on view at the Bronx Documentary Center (BDC) through March 22nd. Our students had the chance not only to examine the work on view, but also to talk to the BDC’s curators and education directors, who conducted an informal Q&A and presented a short-film made by Ortiz for his exhibition.
After watching the film, our students were invited to explore the show in depth, and to each pick one photograph that resonated strongly with them.
After exploring the space and carefully examining the pieces, students shared their selected photograph and presented their thoughts to the class and BDC staff, addressing both the content and the compositional values of the image. Ortiz’s photo documentary explores the consequences of American gun violence, specifically on youth, and opened up multiple avenues for questions and debate.
